Whats the most lethal weapon I can keep in my house?
I want to buy a gun that keeps burglars a mile aways. As a Texas citizen, whats the most lethal weapon i can own and use?
If you know how to use it, a lil'. .380 pistol will be more than enough. The only excuse for the use of deadly force is if you have reasonable concern for the immediate health and welfare of yourself or your family.. not just 'someone on your property'. That means IN your house, close range, around corners, hallways, doorways, etc... the absolute most dangerous and difficult kind of armed conflict situation. If You Are firing at someone 'a mile away'; that's not home defense, it's being a murdering sniper. (And it requires a Barrett .50 cal BMG.. not useful for home defense, but ohhhh, are they fun to shoot!)
I keep a .45 equipped with a surefire illuminator beside my bed, and an 18" 12 Gage beneath it. The shotgun is not loaded, and it's ONLY purpose is to make the sound of jacking one into the chamber. That sound alone will make pretty much anyone abandon their thievery plans in real short order. The pistol is much more maneuverable indoors at close range, and can be used even if an assailant comes up from behind and grapples you... a rifle or shotgun can't.
And not to be indiscreet, but it kinda sounds like You Don't know much about weapons, if this is the question you are asking. It's no sin not to know, but please, get some good training from knowledgeable instructors when you get your weapon, and talk with at least a few gun shop owners before you choose your first one.
And BTW; the most lethal weapon in your house, ranked by number of deaths caused per year, is already parked in your driveway.
Others would include bananna peels (Falls kill over 17,000 people a year), what's in your fridge (Choking is #3 in non-vehicular fatalities) and if you have one, your swimming pool (3000 people die from drownings each year in the US)
The point is; the purpose of the weapon is not to be lethal. Your main intent is not to KILL your assailant, it is to STOP him from doing bad things to you and your family. That is your purpose, not to be his executioner. He may die as a result of What You have to do, but it isn't your end goal.
