Around World
What do you think pyramids around the world were really made for?
Taking into account the theory that someone told/helped the different tribes around the world to build them.
Stepped pyramids or ziggurats were some of the first structures that people think of as pyramids, and are what I believe You Are talking about.
They are seen in Central America, Iran, Iraq, Mesopotamia, Syria, Egypt, and there are even modern examples today such as the John C. Hodges Library in Tennessee.
They were/are used for different purposes in different parts of the world though.
In Central America, the steps were climbed and there were various types of structures at the top. Sometimes a temple, sometimes a prison, the needs and beliefs of the people in the time and in the area influenced its use. The sides of this type of pyramid were also decorated with various sculptures of gods.
Leading up to these impressive constructions were large burial mounds and other more crude versions of the stepped pyramid.
The first stepped pyramid in Egypt, which is still standing, was for Djoser. This pyramid was constructed of mud brick and covered with stone. It is believed that this design was probably based off of the mastaba type of a tomb which was popular before the time of the Great Pyramids. (You Can actually go into a reconstructed mastaba in the Metropolitan Museum of Art In NYC)
The mastaba style was a clay brick temple and there was a burial shaft underneath the structure where the body was lowered. The mastaba allowed for family members to come and make offerings to the passed pharaoh. (Who they believed was a living, walking deity)
In the case of Djoser's stepped pyramid, many mastabas of smaller sizes were stacked upon one another. It had no real internal structure and had few other features. However, it did manage to make quite an impressive effect on the landscape. This lead to others being built in the area.
In the Middle East, these structures were used as temples for various religions. Many examples of these structures can be seen in Iraq and Iran.
Modern structures of this type serve as a nod to the ancient engineers while providing an almost futuristic aesthetic.
Taking into account Jungian theory of a collective unconscious, these structures were not all built at the same time, but around the same point in the development of the culture that created them.
I don't believe that there was external (alien) influence as there were some significant structures built prior to these monuments by each of the cultures that I mentioned earlier that show an ability to build them.
I do think that the trade routes through the Middle East and Egypt brought the idea of a stepped pyramid through that area, but it would not have influenced the people of Mesoamerica. I think that their influence was the surrounding landscape.
